Listen At It

By Kathy Pippig Harris Listen At It Thanksgiving time and all the relatives were gathered ’round the long table, or seated behind TV trays. The television was on and some folks were watching it while visiting with one another. Something on television got their attention and one of the adults said, “Listen at it!” Someone else replied. “Well, if that don’t beat all.” Simple phrases were spoken by folks whose language was simple and concise. They had several idioms that were just as colorful; Phrases and words that brightened the room and warmed the conversation. In school we were taught to speak differently. The way our relatives spoke was discouraged. Sometimes our parents would say things we weren’t taught in school. They’d often correct themselves, as if erasing a mistake. Of course we learned some of their phrases and used them. They were comfortable words to utter, familiar. We liked to spend the weekend with our grandparents. Grandma spoiled us whenever possible. They had an old home in the heart of a small town city. Their backyard was overgrown with fruit trees, cacti, berry vines, flowers, and shrubbery. And taking refuge amidst this were feral cats our grandmother fed. When my brother and I went into the backyard to play, the cats scattered, disappearing into neighbors’ yards. My brother once asked where they went and Grandma said, “They jumped clean over the fence, Hon. They don’t take kindly to anyone but me.” She did sewing, ironing and laundry for folks in town and she often admonished us about the proper way to launder clothing. She used a washboard and a wringer machine, then hung the clothes on a line to dry. She didn’t use a dryer because as she put it, “Your clothes will draw up and be too small for you.” She told us when he was little our father was seriously ill with a high fever. One night while delirious he screamed at his father, “Shoot the lights out, Daddy.” She loved telling us that story. Our father was her only child and she doted on him to a fault. It wasn’t just their speech that was different. They did things that other folks didn’t do. Our grandfather drank his coffee in a saucer and with so much cream the coffee was almost white. He’d break his cornbread up into pieces drop it all in a bowl and pour milk and sugar over it–eat it like a cereal. Our father’s side of the family was from Arkansas and Oklahoma and they spoke with the accents native to their birth states. Their voices musical and often high pitched, it was easy to pick up that inflection in our own speech and at school my brother and I were often teased for the way we spoke. Our mother’s side of the family came from Illinois and they had a tendency to talk fast. They had an accent, too, and my brother and I added that to our own speech, confusing the kids at school all the more. Our father’s side of the family loved to laugh and have a good time. Our mother’s side of the family was more serious about how they took life in; their joys more silently experienced and enjoyed. It was a rich tapestry of culture and mores from which to draw from and it gave my brother and me a multi-faceted perspective at life. Thanksgiving holiday was always an easy going day, comfortable and anticipated. It was the first real holiday of the season when everyone came together in one place, and a durn good time was had by all. As the years played out, more of the family passed on and the get-togethers grew smaller and smaller. The gentle melodious tones that once filled the home during the holiday had thinned out. Where the room was once filled with TV trays and long tables, now only one table is set. The food is still great. But the room is more quiet, the mood subdued. “Care to walk a spell?” My brother asked me after the meal. “Sure!” We put our jackets on and stepped outside. “Which way?” I said. He shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. Down the road a piece.” He pointed to the left and we took off. It was a chilly Thanksgiving afternoon, late in the day and the air was hazy with wood smoke. The streets were quiet as we strolled through the neighborhood we once played in. Remembering the families that once lived in certain homes. We passed the field where we dug the earth out and created a fort. The two trees we used for tree houses. The flood control basin where we caught lizards and tadpoles and took our dogs to let them run free. Somewhere in the skeletal trees that lined the sidewalk a Mockingbird sang loud and clear, breaking the solitude. My brother punched me in the shoulder, the trace of a smile breaking on his face. “Listen at it!” I shook my head. Laughed. We walked on and my eyes filled a bit with tears as I heard the refrain in my head from a room filled with relatives… Listen at it! The Real Secrets to Getting a Good Deal on Stained Glass

By Tim Jeffries Did you know that you can find stained glass deals if you look hard enough? There are a number of places to buy stained glass lets look at a few of them. The easiest and least risky way to buy glass is in a kit. You can purchase kits online: simply search for stained glass kits and youll see dozens of online suppliers. Or you can buy kits at Michaels Arts and Crafts, Ben Franklin, or your local craft store. Many smaller craft stores may not stock kits, but they will be glad to order what you want. The kit will only include glass you need for the project; you dont have to worry about leftovers. If youre new to the hobby, start with a kit or two that way you wont invest in glass inventory you may find you dont need. If you decide to buy glass in bulk, the first place to look is your local glass shop or craft shop. There are advantages and disadvantages to dealing with your local store. The advantages are clear: you can build up a business relationship with the store, you can inspect the glass before you purchase it, and you can ask questions and get advice from a knowledgeable source. The disadvantage is their selection may be limited and their prices may be higher than you can get from wholesale or discount glass companies. Of course, your local shop can order glass, but you lose the advantage of pre-inspecting the glass, and the price will probably be a little higher since the store will need to mark the glass up in order to make a profit. If your store orders glass for you, ask if you can inspect it before you actually make the purchase. The color or texture in the catalog may not be the same as the color or texture you eventually receive. There are a number of glass suppliers that can be found online. Simply search for stained glass supplies or stained glass and youll see hundreds of possibilities. If you decide to try an online supplier, make a small purchase the first time so you can evaluate their quality, professionalism, and service. When youre comparing price with your local shop, make sure you take into account shipping charges; the raw glass may be cheaper, but when combined with shipping costs the total transaction may cost more. Some glass manufacturers sell sample sets. These are exactly what they sound like: packages with a variety of glass types and colors enclosed. Many smaller sample sets cost less than $15 or $20 at online supply stores. Typically larger craft stores like Ben Franklin carry very few glass sample sets; if they do, their selection will be limited, but if you check they may have just what you need. In general the sheets of glass are smaller than what youd normally buy, so youre not stuck with a lot of glass you may never use. If youre new to the hobby, arent sure what you want to make, and are interested in experimenting, a sample set can be an inexpensive way to try out different colors and techniques. If you stay alert you may find great deals from local artisans or hobbyists. For instance, many hobbyists will sell glass if theyre preparing to move glass is hard to pack up and move, and many people wont want to bother. You may not find an opportunity like that often, but if you do, you can usually pay twenty-five percent or less for glass compared to what you would have paid retail. Sometimes glass shops will also sell partial sheets at a large discount. If the partial sheet is large enough for your intended use, great! (Buying partial sheets is like buying carpet remnants.) Glass shops often also have For Sale bulletin boards for hobbyists to use to advertise leftover glass they want to sell keep an eye out for pieces you can use. You can also find supplies and tools at yard sales make sure you have a wish list of tools with you and you may find exactly what youre looking for. You can also buy used tools on For Sale bulletin boards at glass shops; if a local craftsperson has upgraded to a more expensive grinder, for instance, they may be more than willing to sell you their used grinder for a fraction of its original cost. There is much more to this story than written here. Stained glass can be incredibly interesting once you learn all about it… Tim Jeffries is author of The Stained Glass Master Guide. Anniversary Gifts - Nineteenth Anniversary

By Michael Russell For an anniversary gift for your nineteenth anniversary, we take a trip back in time to anniversary number eight. Yes, one of the gift ideas from that anniversary makes a return engagement, except in this case, it is the only choice you have. So we’re going to have to really dive into this one in depth if you’re going to come away with something that you’ll be proud to give to your spouse for this special day. The return gift for this year is something made out of bronze. Originally one of two traditional gifts for anniversary number eight, it is now you’re only option this year. So if you sprung for a bronze made gift eleven years ago, then you’re going to have to dig really hard to come up with something different this year. Don’t worry, we have you covered. Before we get into this, there is one thing you better know right up front. A nice bronze oriented gift is going to cost a lot of money, especially if you go for one of the more popular bronze gift ideas, the bronze statue. There are more bronze statues than you can possibly imagine. Many of these are designed after very old or even ancient themes. For example, you can get a bronze Feng Shui statue for about $1,000. No, that’s not a typo. Of course, if you want, you can get what they call a faux bronze statue. This is a statue that is made out of cold cast resin. Technically, it’s probably not a real bronze gift, but if you can’t afford the real thing and want to get your spouse something close, this is as close as you’re going to get. Most bronze statues are custom made. At least the really good ones are. Yes, if you want, you can head on down to the local gift shop and pick up something for twenty bucks, but it’s not going to have the same effect. And after nineteen years of marriage, your spouse deserves something a lot better. Of course, if you think the Feng Shui statue was a lot of money, you might cringe at the thought of getting your spouse a Celadon Prunus Vase. This is one absolutely gorgeous piece. It also comes with a price tag of about $2,400. Or you might want to go with a White Dragon incense burner. You’re going to have to get a price quote for one of these things. You might want to go with a simple bronze dish and lid with a geometric pattern. You can practically steal one of these for about $1,900. Or you might want to go with a simple bronze dish that you can have made with a design of your choice. This will only set you back about $500. Whoever said that anniversary gifts weren’t expensive, didn’t make it to anniversary number nineteen. But, with a little thought and open mind and a credit card that isn’t yet maxed out, you can actually pick up a gift that won’t break you and make your spouse one very happy married person. Chapeau de Cuoro and Alternative Health

By Kat Lively Deep in the Amazon Rainforest exist an array of exotic plants, trees, and herbs that populate the better part of South America. Recent news tells of the dangers of deforestation and the impact it will have on our planet’s overall environmental state, but not many realize, too, the healing potential the lies within the forest. For centuries the natives of the rainforest have used these natural resources for their restorative and medicinal benefits. One such tree is known as the Chapeau de Cuoro. What is Chapeau de Cuoro? Roughly translated to mean “leather hat,” Chapeau de Cuoro comes from the Echinodorus macrophyllus plant, which is indigenous to the Brazilian forests. It is a large plant which thrives in a damp environment, and is recognized by its large, heart-shaped leaves. What’s so great about Chapeau de Cuoro? It is the leaf of this tropical plant that yields the extract of Chapeau de Cuoro as used by the Amazon people. It is believed that use of this herb relieves discomfort and aches within the joints. Are there side effects to taking Chapeau de Cuoro? While there is no research to indicate any side effects to taking a supplement containing Chapeau de Cuoro, it is advised to seek the professional advice of a physician before taking such an herb for alternative medicinal use. Chapeau de Cuoro sounds great. Where can I get it? Enter Chapeau de Cuoro into Internet search and you are bound to find several alternative health shops selling the herb in various forms. This wonder supplement is in very high demand in South America, but when you shop for such an item you want to be certain you are getting the purest form of the herb available, direct from the Amazon Rainforest. Always check labels for Chapeau de Cuoro or Echinodorus macrophyllus leaf as the main ingredient, and take care to notice any side effects when taking the herb. Relief of joint pain is important, and while many look to alternative means for a solution, it should be done carefully.
