You, Your Cell Phone and Europe

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_Dulaney]John Dulaney The European Union spreads out from the west coast of Ireland to the eastern borders of Latvia and from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean Sea. Travelling to Europe brings you the experience of a rich carpet of landscapes, flowing from the Rock Mountains to the grand beaches, through the green pasture and acrid land. While you travel through Europe, you will find the people with diverse traditions, cultures and languages, making up over 7% of the worlds population. The historic heritage of Europe is defined in its prehistoric cave paintings, in the ancient antiquities of the Greeks and the Romans, in varied architecture of the Vikings and Moors, palaces and baroque churches. You will also find the modern Europe with its vibrant cities, colourful cultural festivities, varied cuisines and winter and summer sports. The cell phone has become a part of your modern day life and where-ever you go, the cell phone in your hand makes you comfortable, knowing that you can be touch with the world at any time and at your will. Europe has GSM technology, a digital mobile communication technology, being used over 214 countries in the world, having more than 80% of the total mobile subscribers in the world. The tangle of mobile frequency bands prevailing in the world is comparable to the mixture of television standards that we have. But then again, at least there is one standard prevailing in one country which makes life easier. In the Unites States, there are dozens of such incompatible mobile frequency bands operating on different network. Even if you have a GSM handset, it is unlikely that it will work in Europe. Europe works on entirely different GSM network frequency bands. North America, Canada and a few other counties in the Americas, work on 850MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands, which have set those countries apart from rest of the world. The first ever digital mobile communication technology, which stormed the world, is the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM). This open architecture technology was first started in Europe and is now prevalent in 214 countries in the world. It replaces the old analog version of mobile telephony and is called the second generation (2G) of the wireless mobile communication with Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) transmission technology. With this technology the voice is uniquely digitally coded by an encoder, which emulates the characteristics of a human voice. It features not only digital transmission of voice but offers General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), a mobile data service, offering up to 115 kilobits per second of data transfer rate. Amongst others, GPRS offers access to data networks like internet, through your mobile phone. GSM countries work on distributed four different set of frequency bands, with some counties operating on few common frequencies. These frequency bands are - 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz. While the GSM networks in North America and Canada and a few other countries near-by are operating on 850MHz and 1900MHz bands, the other countries in the world use entirely a different set of frequency bands, making the GSM phones in Americas incompatible with the communication system in major part of the world. Due to this incompatibility, mobile phones are available in three categories. The Quad-band phones would work on any GSM frequency and are compatible with all the four sets of GSM frequency bands. The Tri-bands support 800MHz, 900MHz and 1800MHz frequency bands, which work in most country networks, while the Dual-bands work on 800MHz and 1900 MHz GSM frequency bands. If you are travelling to Europe, you need to be aware of the network frequency bands of those European countries that you are visiting. There are continuous attempts to achieve world-wide phone standards which are being prevented by the competition between the technological companies and the political interests. These are an existing dispute with the United States and Europe, over a universal mobile telephony standard. While Europe has achieved quite a formidable standard in providing the world with GSM digital technology, the United States and Canada go on using a different technology using Time Division Multiplexing (TDMA) or Code Division Multiplexing (CDMA) transmission technologies, which are incompatible with GSM. Today, the Unites States is moving slowly towards GSM a service which is being provided by some of the companies like, Cingular and other vendors. The ideal solution for moving around with your mobile phone would be one phone, one number that would work anywhere in the world. A roaming status on your US mobile gives you that feature but there are other fall-outs to be considered. Roaming is a word used in wireless telecommunication, where, it refers to extending the connectivity services in a location different from home, and perhaps to a network owned by a different service provider. Roaming occurs when the subscriber of one service provider uses the facilities provided by another. This kind of service can be offered by the service providers entering into service agreements with the others, which include financial aspects also. When you are on roaming, the communication that you have is transmitted through the tower of a different service provider, owing to the arrangement that your service provider back home has with your current one. This involves financial aspects where this service provider charges your provider for the service that they provide you with. This is the reason why you are charged extra for the services that you use while on roaming. The charges may be a standing fee included in your monthly bill as long as you are roaming. Remembering that all incoming calls are free in Europe, while you roam, your outgoing call charges cost more with added roaming charges and your incoming calls are also charged since you are on a roaming status. These charges are levied owing to the financial arrangement that the two service providers have in entering into service agreements in providing you with the roaming feature. While roaming provides you with one phone and one number, the down-side of it is that it is expensive. There are many reasons why you should travel to Europe with a cell phone. Using the telephone in your hotel room might turn out to be an expensive matter and having a cell phone with you has not only the advantage that you may call your associates, your friends or your family back home, but also, you are within the reach of the ones who often call you for different purposes. You can have incoming calls coming in your handset no matter where you are. More-over, your cell phone becomes handy during emergencies. Cell phone plans are different in Europe than that what you have in the United States. For one, all incoming calls are free of charge. There are provisions to go in monthly paid services in some countries in Europe, but mostly the services taken up are the pre-paid ones, where you pay for your talk time credits in advance. As soon as you use up that credit, you can top up your talk time by buying recharge vouchers of different denominations. You will require buying a SIM card for such a plan. There are options available in the United States, where you can buy a SIM card for specific country that you are visiting and rent a compatible GSM mobile handset to go with it. This provides you with a local number and you pay for your call charges as the locals do. You do not receive any bill what-so-ever at the end of the month and you do not pay for any roaming charges. Specifically you do not have to enter into any contract in buying such a pre-paid SIM card. This saves you 80% of your call expenses and with pre-paying for your talk time you can keep a track of your expenses and remain within your budget. If you are travelling to an assorted number of countries in Europe, you have various options in buying an international SIM card and rent the appropriate GSM phone. The Talkabroad SIM card lets you have a single number where-ever you go and will let you make and receive calls. Talkabroad is far cheaper than your mobile on roaming. It offers a pre-paid SIM card which comes with a certain amount of talk time credit, which you can replenish by buying recharge coupons. These coupons are available in practically any shop in the country that you are visiting. The cost of the outgoing calls is a bit more expensive than the country specific SIM cards and incoming calls are free in all the Western European countries and nearly half a dozen countries of Eastern Europe. Talkabroad SIM card allows you to roam over 100 countries during a trip, where people can reach you on one phone number. The package offered by Talkabroad consists of a tri-band GSM mobile phone and a pre-paid SIM card with 30 minutes of talk time credit. Talkabroad is valid for 9 months from the time of your most recent use. The account may be kept alive by making a call, sending SMS message, or buying a recharge coupon at least every nine months. Mobal is a company based in the United Kingdom and offers SIM card which may be used in over 50 international locations. Mobal international is not a pre-paid service and is a pay-as-you-go service, where you receive bills, with the bill amount debited to your credit card. Mobal is cheaper than the charges that you pay to your US service provider, but the call charges are higher than the country specific pre-paid SIM cards. Mobal becomes feasible economically if used less than two hours or so, while you are travelling. If you anticipate heavy usage while travelling in countries outside the United States, a Hop SIM card may be an option for lower call charges. Mobal SIM card is available free of cost. The cell phone that you carry with you is required to be SIM unlocked, for only then you may use SIM cards of your choice. SIM locked phones are meant for the SIM card that it is meant for. SIM locked phones are usually available free of cost when you enter into a contract with a service provider, where a clause in the contract stipulates that you will be required to use the services of that particular service provider for a specific period of time, which is typically one year. The mobile phone that you receive from them will only work with the SIM card that you had received from the same service provider. Therefore, whether you take your own GSM phone, rent or buy one, you need to make sure that the cell phone is SIM unlocked. Careful planning of your visit to Europe will provide you greater savings in your mobile communication while you are abroad. The planning would provide you with the idea of that SIM card that you need to buy, so as to give you an optimum saving in your cell phone usage. For more information and price details, visit www.planetomni.com/ Cell phone use overseas. In 99% of the world the local cellular service standard is called GSM. We use this in the states as well. When combined with a SIM CARD (which usually goes under the battery of the phone) the phone is able to communicate and the SIM CARD also holds the telephone number and memory for pre-paid credit. Rates can be extremely low using this system. For example in 99% of all SIM CARDS incoming calls are free and calls to the states can cost a trifle. Such as, from the UK to the USA 7 cents/minute, from Israel 22 cents, from Australia 27 cents. Yes, USA Dollar cents! There are today even prepaid service providers in the USA offering rates of 10 cents per minute to call anywhere in the US to any type of phone. No contracts, no credit card checks, no bills. Pre-paid always means no minimums no contracts, no obligations. You only pay for the calls made. You’ll need an unlocked GSM tri-band or quadband UNLOCKED phone. The Cell Phone Facts You Need to Know

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ted_Anders]Ted Anders The popularity of cellular phones all over the world has simply exploded and you can’t go anywhere in the world, not even a poor country that does not even have hot water, where people are not walking around with cell phones. The popularity of these phones is obvious because it makes interpersonal communication significantly easier and faster, however are there any drawbacks to cell phones or even health risks you should be aware of? Of course, when you go buy a cell phone the vendor does not clue you into to anything other than the great benefits, however you should review some of the potential safety issues as well so you know all the benefits and drawbacks to owning a cellular phone. Is there a Health Risk? You may have seen on the news or read in the newspaper or even online about possible health risks from using cellular phones. However, to date there is no sound proof that cellular phones can cause health problems. Additionally, there is no sound proof that they do not. Cellular phones emit a radio frequency (RF), albeit small, that are microwaves when the cell phone is in use. Also, when the phone is in standby mode it emits even smaller levels of RF. So, the question is do these low levels of RF waves that are being emitted from the cellular phone produce health hazards? Currently the consensus is no, however it is widely known that high RF waves do cause health problems due to heating of the body’s tissues. But, the low level RF emissions are not enough to cause heating of the tissues so it does not cause a health risk, right? This is believed to be true and doctors and researchers are continually looking into the subject to detect whether or not cell phones pose a health risk to users or not. At the moment nothing has been discovered so you should be able to use your cell phone with peace of mind that you are not putting your health at risk. How Will I Know if there is a Health Risk? As you probably already know the FDA is responsible for reviewing drugs and health related products to ensure they are suitable for public consumption and use and will not cause additional health problems. At the moment the FDA does not review the safety of cellular phones, although it does have the obligation to do so if it is found certain, or all, cellular phones emit RF to the point of affecting the health of users. Although this has not occurred as of yet the FDA does suggest to cell phone manufacturers that they develop the phone in a way as to reduce and minimize RF to the user. Also, the FDA suggests to cell phone manufacturers that they continue studying any possible health effects that might result from the use of cellular telephones and that they be diligent informing consumers of any possible risks that might exist. What do the Studies Say? There have also been a variety of studies completed to determine how RF emissions from cellular phones might affect an individual’s health. Studies have been conducted on animals as well as epidemiology studies that do not have conclusive results. The studies on animals had flaws in the way the study was carried out and while exposure to low level RF emissions did show a likelihood to develop cancer in the brain or mouth these animals were already predisposed to developing these types of cancers despite the RF emissions so there is no way a cause and effect relationship can be drawn. Also, the studies had a variety of results that have not been recreated in other studies. The epidemiolgoy studies did not show a cause and effect relationship between cancer and low lever RF emissions from cell phones for the short term. However, there is no way one can know for sure if the long term use of cell phones is risky or not because no long term studies have been conducted. Of course over time if many individuals start developing brain and mouth cancers after 20 years of talking on the cellular phone then there will be some obvious relationship. However, until the time there is some conclusive evidence as to whether or not cellular phones cause cancer or put an individual at risk for other types of health risks then more studies will be conducted. What Next? Studies are continually being conducted to try and determine if there is any relationship between RF emissions and health risks. Time will be one of the biggest factors to determine what, if any, health hazards might be associated with cellular phones. Also, the FDA is working to determine if there are any hazards and if so how to deal with them. If you have a cellular phone and are worried about RF emissions then you might consider using a handset instead of talking on the phone held up to your ear. The reason for this is the farther the cell phone is from your beady the less RF emissions your body will absorb and the less risk, if there is a risk, experienced due to the RF emissions. This topic is still under debate and probably will be for some time. So, if you are a cell phone user you should do a little research on your own and determine if you believe cell phones pose a risk to your health or not. You can also learn some tricks to reduce the amount of RF emissions and limit your amount of time talking on your cell phone. Regardless, cell phones look like they are here to stay so if there is a health risk researchers need to determine it quickly and fix it so the rest of the world can continue on with their conversations. The ‘No-End’ List Of Mobile Features

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Martin_Dev]Martin Dev A superlative rise in mobile technology, has metamorphosed a mobile phone into an all-in-one gizmo, potential to tempt a buyer to buy the phone just on the basis of a newly introduced innovative feature. A feature, potential to extend the functionality of a mobile phone from a mere communicative medium to a mobile camera, a mobile music player, or an on-the-go picture editor. The options are too many to choose from. From the very introductory phase, mobile phone makers have realised the necessity to introduce add-on features to a mobile phone. Be it those simple games to rescue one from boredom, or a music player supporting different music formats, every added feature gradually has become an integral part in a mobile phone user’s daily life activity. Adding to the simple yet useful functions of alarms, clocks and alerts, mobile phones equipped with high resolution optic lens, have functions more of a digital camera than just a mere calling device. An integrated music player with a present-day mobile phone is able to play sound files of various formats and exerts stiff competition to a high-definition yet comparatively costly portable music player. Multimedia Messaging (MMS) facility offers a better and livelier option compared to age-old text messaging. GPS receivers integrated to a phones offer possibility to track a location of one’s choice. Bluetooth add-ons are in the aid to free one from cumbersome entangle of wires. Thanks to the die-hard competition. The upgradation process is very frequent and the feature list finds simultaneously regular new entrants to incite buyer’s interest. With every introduction, the phone is gradually taking the shape of a multi-tasking portable, easy-to-use device. In all, we mobile users stand to gain from the process and have a chance to find a new and interesting additional feature to try our hand with. For mobile users, the competition offers fair chance to select from the models of phones laced with the features most suitable for us. Sun Tan Warnings and Precautions

By Tim Gorman As the summer months get closer many people begin to prepare themselves for a very common and soothing activity known as sun tanning. In fact lots of folks have already started working on their tans for summer in the privacy of their own home or in a tanning salon. They are able to achieve nice dark tans through regular tanning sessions with commercial tanning beds and supplies. Speaking of tanning supplies you would probably be surprised at the number of tanning bed supplies that exist on the current market. Items such as tanning lotions, tanning bed parts, fans, tanning accelerators, sprays, lamps, clothes and even tanning tattoos all add to the ability to achieve and enhance your tan in your home or at a commercial tanning salon. If youre in the market for tanning supplies you need to make sure and conduct some research, especially when considering the purchase of tanning sprays, lotions and accelerators. The difference between a good purchase and a bad purchase can have you looking orange instead of the golden brown tan youre hoping to achieve. Another thing to consider when tanning indoors with a tanning bed is the danger to your skin cells. Even though a tanning bed may be safer then obtaining a tan using the suns direct rays its still not completely healthy. The reality is excessive use of tanning supplies when combined with an abundance of tanning could cause a common form of skin cancer known as melanoma. Many health care specialists readily agree that an overexposure to UV rays can be harmful to your skins health. The main difference between a natural tan and an indoor tan can be found in the type of UV rays used to achieve the suntan. Commercial tanning beds use UV-A rays while the sun emits UV-B rays. Tanning bed experts would argue that UV-A rays are better for you because they decrease your chance of suffering a sunburn when compared to the harmful effects of UV-B rays. Additionally they also advocate the use of UV-A rays and sun tan beds because they have been proven to help produce a high concentration of vitamin D which assist in preventing dangerous diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis and even certain forms of cancer. No matter what you believe or read, when using an indoor tanning bed exposure should be limited to a few timed sessions each week of say 15 or 20 minutes in duration. Increased tanning times greatly improves the odds of the powerful UV rays that are emitted from the tanning bed bulbs being able to damage the cellular structure of your skin. There have been some studies shown that tanning beds should be limited to folks that are no longer teenagers as a precaution to prevent overexposure to harmful rays and to prevent serious damage which could result in skin cancer at a later time in that persons life. As you can see even indoor sun tanning can be dangerous to your skin and your health when abused and used excessively. If youre planning on working on your tan for the summer in a commercial tanning bed (whether in your house or a tanning salon) make sure to make smart decisions and limit your exposure time to the tanning lamp rays. Smart sun tanning will not only allow you to achieve that dark golden brown tan you so desperately seek it will also keep your skin safe and prevent you from contracting skin cancer at a later point in your life. Timothy Gorman is a successful Webmaster and publisher of Tanning-Bed-Solutions.com. He provides more information on the dangers of sun tanning, home tanning beds, bulbs and lamps that you can research in your pajamas on his website. How To Choose a Dating Service

By Sara Blackmoore There are so many dating sites out there, hundreds if not thousands, how do you even begin to decide where to register and start your online dating experience? You could just pick one at random, create a profile, and sit back and wait for the other members to beat a path to your email inbox. Who knows, you could get lucky and it might work out first time. But even a tiny bit of investigation beforehand could save a lot of time and frustration! The trick is to be prepared. You probably wouldnt go off to buy a new car and start by trawling around dealerships at random, you would already have an idea as to what sort of car you want how big, how fast, how much money you had to spend, and so forth. Based on these criteria you would have a good idea of which car showrooms to visit to find the right sort of vehicle for your particular needs. So the first question to ask yourself, is what do you want out of a dating site? Sounds obvious a date! But what sort of date? Are you looking for a serious relationship possibly leading to marriage? Or are you after a casual partner and youll see where it leads? Or perhaps you just want some uncomplicated fun. The good news is that among the myriad of services out there on the web, there is something to cater for every requirement. Some sites will suit all tastes, but there are many that specialise, and the more specific you are about what you want, the better your chances of finding it. Before looking at the sites on offer, think about how you will write your personal profile. Jot down a paragraph or two about yourself, your interests, and your hopes for a partner. Then write a few words about what you are looking for in a potential dating match. Doing this offline will help you structure in your own mind what sort of date you are looking for, and then when you go and look at some dating sites, youll easily be able to pick out those that offer the best chance of providing what you want. The added benefit of course is that when it comes to filling in your profile online, you will be prepared and wont be sat in front of your screen lost for words. Instead your profile will read in a very natural and honest way. I would always recommend choosing at least two sites to register with and put your profile on, after all, they are almost all free to start with you only need decide if you want to pay when and if someone of interest turns up and you want to make contact. Websites like The Dating WebReview can also save you time. The reviews will quickly give you an idea about the services each dating site offers, and whether they specialise. Choosing an internet dating site isnt difficult. In the end it comes down to finding one that you enjoy using. After all, if it appeals to your taste, then you already have something in common with the other members. Adult Sites Without Adult Content!

By Geoff Auckett A LITTLE INFO ABOUT ADULT DATING When you have been online have you ever gone searching for dating sites? Yes. Has your search taken you beyond dating sites to ADULT dating sites? More often than not, I’m sure your answer is also - YES. Was that where you really wanted to go? I know that the answer is not always -YES. So if you are a serious single person looking to find another serious single person - help each other out. Out in thye big WWW there are lots of fantastic dating sites for you to consider. The obvious question arises - “How do I know which dating site is going to give me what I am after?” When looking for a site you must first consider YOURSELF. To make a cake you need ingredients, kitchen utensils, a cookbook and some way of cooking. If you are dress making, you need instructions to follow, a pattern, pins and a sewing machine. The same goes for finding yourself a person to share special moments with - there are instructions for you to follow. Generally speaking most online dating services have a set of helpful instructions to get you going. Also you should find information to prepare you for your first few face to face dates. Most of these are common sense - however in the nervous and excitement of it all, there may be one or two things forgotten. So now that you are equipped and ready, all you have to do is join a dating site (two if you feel the need). Leave your personal details and a photo or two, then watch your inbox. By doing this you are not only helping yourself discover your future but you are doing the same for one other person. Makes you feel good doesn’t it. Helping other people always makes us feel good. Perhaps you have children that are fast approaching the dating age and you want to protect them from some of the dating sites which have “adult” content on them. Good for you. It seems very unreasonable to be bombarding young adults with explicit material (in fact to anyone, in my opinion). As always when you have found someone that sounds remotely interesting - let a good friend know so that when it comes time to your first face to face meeting they can either make sure you get home on time or maybe even go with you just to keep it all safe. Doing this the first few times is wise. These are just a few helpful hints which hopefully will make your dating experience all the more enjoyable. We both know that unfortunately things don’t always go to plan and it is smart to be prepared when launching into new experiences. My name is Geoff Auckett and I am 46 years of age. I have two FANTASTIC daughters. The eldest is very quickly approaching dating age and when I went on the net to see what IS available, I was amazed. Hence http://www.Adult-dating-with-the-net.com This site will NOT disappoint you or any person who is serious about finding a date, friend, soul mate or maybe even a spouse. All the dating sites listed, I have checked myself. Each one has a set of terms and conditions which basically state that profanity, obscenity, vulgarity, nudity and pornography ARE NOT TOLERATED! I am sure that you will find this site of GOOD QUALITY, SAFE, CLEAN AND FUN! I hope that you enjoy it and don’t forget to bookmark it. Why not go a step further. On the Adults helping adults page, why not drop me a line and tell me what you think. Looking forward to hearing from you. Lighted Holiday Potpourri Jars

By Rachel Paxton Lighted potpourri jars are a festive addition to any holiday decor. They are inexpensive, easy to make, and make great hostess gifts. SUPPLIES: 1 package Christmas lights (20-bulb strand) Wide-mouth canning jar Potpourri Holiday ribbon Pinecones, small holiday decorations Doily or holiday fabric cut to fit over the mouth of the canning jar Glue gun DIRECTIONS: Plug in light strand and see if any bulbs are burned out and need to be replaced. Arrange light strand and potpourri in canning jar while lights are on so you’ll be able to get it just right and be able to see what it will look like when it’s finished. Place doily or fabric on top of jar, arranging the cord of the light strand so it’s coming out where you want the back to be. Tie some ribbon around the neck of the jar to hold the fabric in place. When you get it arranged the way you like it, use the hot glue gun to glue the fabric and ribbon down in several places so it will hold. Decorate the outside of the jar with festive decorations like pine cones or artificial holly berries. Craft stores have a variety of holiday decorations you can cut apart and re-arrange any way you like. Experiment with different potpourri scents. The lights in the jar will warm up the potpourri and help the scent fill the room. These jars are very pretty and will look different depending on if you use clear or colored lights. These are great for last-minute present ideas or hostess gifts. Happy holidays! Send a Real Greeting Card and Get More Customers

By E. Kinton, Jr. Did you know that Americans give more than 7 billion greeting cards each year? According to the Greeting Card Association, we spend over $7.5 billion dollars annually on cards. One thing to consider is that greeting cards are not just for birthdays, Christmas, and other holidays. They are also very effective tools for increasing business and sales. Some of us only associate giving cards with special days but savvy business men and women have been using them for decades to stay in touch with customers and build name recognition. There is no faster way to connect with a client than to send them an unexpected, real greeting card in the mail. Recently, one of the big trends on the internet has been the increased use of the e-card or electronic card. E-cards are quite popular and they allow people to send an instant message to friends and family. However, most people still prefer a real card versus the online version. Flooded email boxes and excessive spam are just a couple of the reasons why this might be the case. It is reported that 9 out of 10 Americans surveyed actually prefer a physical letter or greeting card. That’s probably why hundreds of people per day search for the term “send a real greeting card” in their quest to stay away from less personal online-only cards. In addition to their personal appeal, a real greeting card is more likely to be opened, read, and retained when compared to other direct mail pieces. Maybe you have heard the story of Joseph Samuel Girard. He is well known to be one of the greatest salesmen in the world. For 12 straight years, he sold more cars and trucks than any other salesperson. During a fifteen year career, he sold 13,001 cars and is listed in the Automotive Hall of Fame. The Truth Behind the Veil

By Weam Namou During my trip to Baghdad five years ago I visited my parents Christian village in Mosil and asked my cousins to find me an abayya in the souk. He found one I liked, disputed with the merchant over a few dinars, wanted to walk out, and at my plea, agreed on a price. I left with an abbaya that today still has some of the spices Id carried in my luggage in a journey that lasted from Baghdad to Detroit three days. Whats an abbaya? Its a veil that reminds me of my mother and the neighborhood women whod sometimes wear it when they went to the market. Since Saddam encouraged women to wear western clothing and he was against Islamic fundamentalists, the burka wasnt allowed in Iraq. Usually older women wore the abbaya. They did so for religious purposes, as Islam requires women to dress modestly in order to keep the focus of beauty on spiritual and not superficial attributes. Wearing the veil was also a way to avoid harassment. But mostly, they wore it because it was part of a culture that predates Islam by many centuries. In the Near East, Assyrian kings first introduced both the seclusion of women in royal harem and the veil. Prostitutes and slaves, however, were told not to veil, and were slashed if they disobeyed this law. This practice also appeared in classical Greece, in the Byzantine Christian world, in Persia and in India among upper caste women. Its suggested that afterwards it spread among the Arabs. Muslims in their first century were relaxed about female dress. As Islam reached other lands, regional practices, including the covering of women, were adopted. Yet it was only in the second Islamic century that the veil became common, first used among the powerful and rich as a status symbol. Muhammads wives originally dressed in veil in order for people to distinguish them from other women. Throughout Islamic history only a part of the urban classes were veiled and secluded. Rural and nomadic women, the majority of the population, were not. The veil did not appear as a common rule to be followed until around the tenth century. In the Middle Ages numerous laws were developed which most often placed women at a greater disadvantage than in earlier times. For 2,000 years, Catholic women have veiled themselves before entering a church or any time they are in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament (e.g., during sick calls). It was written into the 1917 Code of Canon Law, Canon 1262, that women must cover their heads especially when they approach the holy table For many centuries (until around 1175) Anglo-Saxon and then Anglo-Norman women, with the exception of young unmarried girls, wore veils that entirely covered their hair, and often their necks up to their chins. It was in the Tudor period (1485), when hoods became increasingly popular, that veils of this type became less common. Sometimes a sheer was draped over and pinned to the bonnet or hat of a woman in mourning. They would also have been used as a simple method of hiding the identity of a woman who was travelling to meet a lover, or doing anything she didnt want other people to find out about. Veils were also sometimes worn to protect the complexion from sun and wind damage (when un-tanned skin was fashionable), or to keep dust out of a womans face. Conversely, veils are often part of the stereotypical image of the courtesan and harem woman where the mysterious veil hints at sensuality and the unknown. Among the Tuareg of West Africa, women do not traditionally wear the veil, while men do. Its believed that the veil wards off evil spirits, but most probably relates to protection against the harsh desert sands as well. This veil is worn from 25 years of age and is never removed, even in front of family members. What about the origin of a brides veil? Some say that the veil was introduced in ancient Rome to keep away the evil spirits. Its also said that it was a symbol of purity, chastity, and modesty. Other say that the origin of the bridal veil was due to the circumstances of an arranged marriage. In days past, men bargained with an eligible young ladys father for their hand in marriage. After the ceremony, the veil was lifted to reveal the brides features. This was to keep a groom from backing out of the deal if he didnt like what he saw. With my mother, the veil was used for convenience, when she didnt want to change from her nightgown in order to go to the bakery and buy bread. Or when my cousin wanted to meet her lover without anyone noticing her. Or it was worn by those who found it attractive or simply liked having it flutter around their ankles. When I was a little girl, I used my mothers veil to play house. I couldnt wait to grow up and have my own veil, not knowing then that one day wearing fabric in such a manner, or not wearing it, could cost women their lives.
