Kissing Cyber-Frogs

By Amy Wink Krebs People would have you believe there are only two kinds of Internet relationships: the kind where an innocent young girl gets sucked in to cyber-hell by a cunning psychopath….and the kind where magic steps in to connect two made-for-each-other lovers serendipity style, ending in a glorious wedding with horse-drawn carriages and flower petals. The former become frightening stories on news shows that parents watch with growing concern; the latter, Meg Ryan movies that interest lonely chatters praying for a similar fairy tale. But Im here to tell you about a third kind of Internet relationship. The kind where you get neither killed nor married at the end, but emerge with lips that taste suspiciously like frog. I know because Ive been there. I mean Ive really been there. I assure you that my definition of been there does not mean that I ventured shyly into the book lovers’ chat room one day and exchanged flirtations with some Internet amphibian for a few hours. My definition of been there involves hundreds of pages of e-mails (in hard copy, enabling endless late-night re-readings), enormous phone bills, a nifty language barrier, expensive plane tickets, friends and family diagnosing me as crazy, and hours upon hours upon still more hours of the dream-time existence that is Internet love. I was in my mid-twenties upon embarking on my “Internet Relationship Ride.” At a favorite website I was reading bulletin board postings and thought, hey - this guys from Germany…Ill bet it would be interesting to have him as sort of an e-mail pal. It was as innocent as that. So I wrote to him. And he wrote back in his Pidgin English. And before you could say girl gone stupid, I had fallen for this Deutschland Romeo. You know how sometimes its easier to pour your heart out to strangers? That goes double for cyber-strangers. Its so easy to tap-tap-tap at those keys and wait in hopeful anticipation for a response full of affirmation and validation. Real-life friends were somehow flung aside as I raced home from work to check my e-mail or engage in hours-long instant chats, gobbling precious sleep time. The threshold I passed through was unmistakable. I entered a completely new existence - a world where love was blind, deaf, and dumb (in my case, exceptionally dumb.) What an addicting emotional rush! I couldnt get enough. In any Internet relationship, however, you are denied a certain instinct from which to draw conclusions. There is no body language, no vocal innuendo, no pheromones. There is so much missing. In the cyber-world, you fall in love with one piece of the person only, no matter how complete that piece presents itself to be. Here lay my biggest problem. About a year into our relationship, my German flew to visit for 10 days. Much hoopla and anticipation centered around the very moment when we would meet one anothers eyes and seal our love forever in a magical whirlwind of emotional rapture. We spent weeks prior to his flight typing only of THE MOMENT. We built it up so much that Im certain that any meeting, however celestial, could not have fulfilled our ridiculous expectations. Needless to say, it did not. It is awkward, to say the least, to be abruptly presented with someone whom you have never seen in person and yet are supposedly in love with. He disembarked the plane. We recognized one another (we had of course exchanged many pictures by this time). We moved aside to embrace and - gulp - kiss. There was no magic whatsoever. No bells of heaven pealing in joyful acknowledgement of our union. No cherubs flitting around us. Nothing, really, except two intensely nervous individuals regarding one another with something significantly less than adoration while valiantly attempting to convey the fairy-tale script and stage direction we had written. Suffice it to say that the entire visit remained awkward. In real-life, this man was still sweet. But also, amazingly, QUIET! Of course it never occurred to me that wed have anything but rich conversations that lasted till giddy dawns. For obvious reasons, you cant be a quiet person on the Internet. All you have are words. And as an extrovert, I could neither fathom nor interpret this shy, silent German man. I wish I could tell you that the visit ended and, with maturity and grace, we went our separate ways. But I found myself unable and unwilling to walk away. I had worked too hard, believed too completely. I began to deny my inner voice…you know, the one everyone is always telling you to listen to. Its the language barrier, I told myself. Its the strangeness of a new country. Its anything we can get past, work through. During his visit, I actually found myself longing for him to leave so that we could settle back into our comfortable cyber-love. And thats exactly what happened. I took a German class and managed a 200-or-so-word vocabulary. Ich bin ein Americanerin. Vo ist die toilette? That kind of thing. We chatted on the phone more so I could practice. We wrote long, exhausting e-mails about his shy behavior and how we could become closer in spite of it. For another full year I attempted to jam this square peg into a round hole. Finally I flew to his country, alone, determined that it would be different this time. Oh, it was different all right. Different in a complete disaster kind of way. This time I was unable to deny my instinct. Its hard to keep the blinders on when every cell in your body is crying get me the hell out of here! Culture shock provided a grueling backdrop for my epiphany. I needed to end it. End it all. I simply was not suited for anything even close to expatriotism. I didnt enjoy my German class, I didnt enjoy my make-believe life, and I just didnt have the energy to pretend my way through one more day of this sham. I used this somber realization as a springboard for a conversation with my German, during which I finally ended our ridiculous relationship. I still think about the German from time to time. Im sure that hell make someone a very nice (albeit very quiet) husband. And I dont regret my Internet relationship, any more than Ive regretted any mistake in life from which Ive learned something…even if I had to learn it by behaving like an idiot. So if youre thinking about having an Internet fling, I wish you a safe adventure and much love and luck…but mostly, I wish you the sense to always trust your instincts. A frog is a frog, no matter how princely he seems online. And the taste of a frogs kiss does not wash easily off a fools lips. Follow Your Instincts

By Julia Jones It is only by following your deepest instinct that you can lead a rich life, and if you let your fear of consequence prevent you from following your deepest instinct, then your life will be safe, expedient and thin. Katherine Butler Hathaway We all have heard that animal instincts are the strongest. The natural instinct in these creatures is their behavior that allows them to react quickly. Dogs have very strong instinct that makes them realize a lot of shortcomings beforehand. Although very few human have that strong instinct yet all of us have a basic instinct that tell us inwardly what is correct and what one should do if certain things are going wrong. We do not learn about these instincts but it is something naturally gifted. We only have to make an effort to listen to our inner voice. There is no instinct like that of the heart. Lord Byron has said it right. The true instincts in a man are the voice of his or her heart. People should do what the heart tells them to do. When things are not going right it is the heart that tells us to move forward to resolve the problems. Listen to your inner voice, the voice that is true and honest and helps to take right decisions. Most of the times when people face tribulations in life or if something is not going smoothly in life, people let things go as they are. They do not make an effort to find out the problem and thing that the difficulties will be resolved with the passage of time. And it is here where many couples make a mistake. Often when couples are going through bad period they feel it is a part of life and will be settled on its own. But this is not the case always. Most of the times things need to be solved out otherwise situations turn out to be worse. People should listen to their instincts and should work out the problem together. At times when things are going wrong something from inside makes us feel that the problem is caused by such and such reason. This feeling is so strong that no other reason comes to mind apart from that particular reason. But at it is just one thought that comes to the mind and vanishes. It too could be the indication of your inner instinct. Whatever the indication individuals should not ignore these inner voices and try to solve the difficulty along with their mate with the help of their inner instinct. In conclusion it can be said what Oprah Winfrey states, Follow your instincts. That’s where true wisdom manifests itself. You make the right decisions when you follow your instincts. Riding Lawn Mowers

By Magne Bjorklund There is a lot to know about lawnmowers. If you want to purchase a riding lawnmower you will want to consider many factors like the mowing area, horsepowers, maneuvering, cost, storage, attachments, and Maintenance requirements. The mowing area determines the type of mower that you need. If you have less than an acre, you can purchase either a walking or riding mower. If you have more than acre you will want to just, go with a riding mower. You will also want to look at how many inches your deck will be able to cut at once. You will want to look at a deck that cuts a couple feet at once; a 30-40 inch deck should be fine for your riding lawn mower. As for horsepower, you will want the most that you can afford. The more horsepower, the better the cut on the grass. The more horsepower you can get will also perform better in damp or wet grass. It is best to go with the higher horsepower because it will make your yard look more even and a lot better than a lower horsepower. You should also remember that most lawnmowers need to have the power to go with the slopes that your ground may have. You should also try to see if you can get one with a mulching function, but to have the mulching function you will need a higher power machine. If you have a lot of trees in your yard, its good to have the mulching function and bag so that all the leaves dont stay on your yard. You will also want to consider your maneuvering ability. Do you think that you can make tight turns around trees, walls, and flower beds? It is important that you get a size of lawn mower that you can maneuver quickly and with skill. Dont purchase a big lawn mower because it has more power and not be able to handle the piece of machinery. Also, think if you will need any attachments. This will raise the price of the machine and it may not fit into your budget. Thats another thing, you have to budget well for your purchase. Before you go to buy the riding lawn mower try to thing of what you would want and then go online and do some research. By doing your research you will know that you can get a deal and it will also allow you to know what price range you should strive for. The cost of lawn mowers can be very high and even cost a couple thousand dollars. If you cant afford a big, high-powered machine, go with the best that you can afford. You will also want to look at storage. If you will need to buy a bigger shed, put that into your budget as well. As for the maintenance, you should get a lawn mower that requires very little maintenance other than filling the gas tank up. Geographic Tongue: Benign Migratory Glossitis - What It Is And What It Is Not

By Liam Snow The Geographic Tongue condition earned its name due to affected tongues looking like a aerial snapshot of a piece of land: grooves in the tongue, and irregular patches of rough and smooth areas. Medically, the condition is known as Benign Migratory Glossitis. “Benign” means that the condition is not going to develop into anything more serious. “Migratory” means that the tongue’s appearance changes over time, particularly with the rough and smooth patches ‘moving’. “Glossitis” means ‘inflammation of the tongue’. Geographic Tongue is a very common condition, and there is some indication that it’s prevalence is growing. It can be painful, but should not be confused with other conditions of the tongue which are generally more painful and would be treated in a different way. Geographic Tongue Remedy provides a support forum and recommends an excellent resource for treating Geographic Tongue naturally. Three other common tongue disorders that can be confused with Geographic Tongue are: Yeast Infection or Thrush. Usually there are raised white patches on the tongue, surrounded by red borders. This is a painful condition, often made worse by attempts to scrape off the white patches, which can result in bleeding. Thrush can be treated using anti-fungal drugs. Oral Lichen Planus. This condition is usually localised to the inner surface of the cheeks, but can affect the surface of the tongue too. Not much is known about this condition, but it is more painful than Geographic Tongue. Oral Lichen Planus can respond well to steriod medication. Glossopyrosis or Burning Tongue. The appearance of the tongue is generally unaffected but severe pain is experienced, expecially when the tongue comes into contact with spicy or hot food, citrus, or toothpaste. Post-menopausal women are most at risk of developing this condition. Potential causes include vitamin B, folic acid, or estrogen deficiences or yeast infection. To treat any of these conditions, firstly consult a throat doctor for a correct diagnosis. Geographic Tongue is usually best treated naturally, although topical steroids can be tried. The most successful approach is often to determine the root cause, which is commonly deficiences in vitamins and minerals, and in the efficiency of the digestive system. Why a Lawnmower is Essential for Every Garden

By Andrew Caxton If you own a garden, one of the most important accessories which you will need includes a lawnmower. Obviously if you do not have any grass in your garden you will not need one, but if you do it really is essential! Nobody likes overgrown grass and the only way to keep it trim and proper is if you cut it with a lawnmower. Lawnmowers take away all the hard work and there are various ones to suit each garden size as well as your own personal needs. Finding the Right Lawnmower to Suit You If you are on the lookout for a new lawnmower you may be surprised by the amount of choice available. With so many different sizes and types on the market, just how do you know which one will be right for you? Well, it is all about doing your research. By doing the right amount of research beforehand will really help you to find the right type of lawnmowers for you. For example, ask yourself the following questions: How big is the garden? What is your overall budget and are you willing to pay extra for a better model? Would you prefer an environmentally friendly mower? Those are just a few of the questions that you need to ask yourself. The size of your garden will be the biggest determination of what type of lawnmower you purchase. This is because you will need a certain size which will be able to cope with the amount of grass that you have. If for example you have an extremely large garden, you will need to maybe buy a sit on lawnmower. However, if you have a fairly small garden it would be pointless buying a sit on mower as there wouldnt be enough space for it. The size of the garden also makes a difference to where you get an electric or a gas powered lawnmower. Electric ones usually have wires and if you have a large garden, the wires might not allow you to stretch to certain parts of it and a gas one may be better for you in those circumstances. The type of fuel that the lawnmower uses will also make a difference to the environment and so you need to decide which type you would prefer using and which would be more environmentally friendly. Overall buying a lawnmower is fairly straight forward if you do a little research and ensure you are getting the right type for you beforehand. Always find the best mower for you by shopping around and getting the best price available. Tips for Designing Bonsai Trees

By Francesca Black Bonsai are shaped by trimming the branches or by wiring them into new positions. You are dealing with living things, and you must be respectful of that. You will kill trees. This is a sad fact of the activity, especially as you start out. Commit yourself to understanding why every tree dies and what can be done to prevent it. Learn from your mistakes and do your best to prevent them in the future. Every tree is different. Learn to care for a few different types of plants, and grow your collection from there. How to Begin the Art of Bonsai Remove the tree from the plastic pot by turning the pot upside down, tapping the bottom, and letting the tree slide out into your hand. The soil should not be too dry, so that the root ball remains intact. Gently scrape away the topsoil around the base of the tree, to expose the lower trunk (about one quarter to one half inch). Try not to break too many surface roots. First thing is to look at the roots of the tree and check to see if it gives the appearance of a strong foundation. Cut off the bottom third of the soil and roots, and flatten out the remaining root mass. Prepare the bonsai pot by placing a piece of screen over each drainage hole, and pour a layer of potting soil into the bottom of the pot. Place the tree in the pot, pour in the remaining soil, and pack it firmly. Finally, submerge the bonsai, pot and all, in water, up to the base of the trunk, and let it sit in the water for a few minutes. Interesting Bonsai Visual Effects In bonsai, the rule of thirds states that the first (lowest and biggest) branch should be at about one third of the total height of the tree. It is the trunk that gives the tree its visual strength, and every effort should be made to have at least the bottom two-thirds of the height clear of branches at the front of the tree. Next is checking the trunk. The shape of the trunk will basically determine the style you choose. In almost all cases, however, a thick base, which tapers gradually and gently to a thin apex, will make for a nice tree. Which style you prefer will depend on the movement of the trunk. Look at the branching pattern. The lower branches should be thick while the upper ones should be thin. The branches should be laid out like the spokes of a wheel with some going to the back. This will give the tree depth when you look at it. No two branches should leave the trunk at the same level. The handlebar effect is unnatural looking and, if left, will cause the trunk to swell at their level causing an ugly bulge in the trunk line. If your tree has such a fault you should, if a deciduous tree, remove one of the branches entirely. Try to avoid having branches spaced evenly down the trunk. Reduce the distance between the branches as you go toward the top of the tree. Finally examine the plant to see if it is healthy. Be sure not to wire so tightly that you cut into the bark, or so loosely that you do not have support. Minor wire marks can sometimes add interest and show that the tree has been trained, giving branches character after several years. However, major wire marks are very ugly. To hide any marks that look unnatural you can strategically place foliage at intervals in front of the trunk, so that the trunk line is not completely visible. It may be ten years (or longer) before your plant will actually be a bonsai. Don’t be discouraged by this, but think of it as part of the experience. Perhaps most importantly, understand that when you put a tree in a pot you are committing yourself to the care of that tree. You cannot simply ignore it or it will die. Bonsai is a responsibility as well as a hobby. If you practice it with care and patience, the rewards are tremendous. Four Steps to Hunger Control

By John Mericle M.D. Axiom Number Two: Hunger Control Trying to lose weight without understanding how to control your hunger -impossible. Probably the main reason so many diets fail is because they ignore hunger. Hunger is one of the human’s strongest drives, right up there with procreation and survival. Diets that attempt to restrict calories by controlling portion sizes are almost universally failures. All the positive imagery in the world will not stop your hunger, even for a nanosecond. Hunger is just like a river. You can dam it up for a while, but it will eventually spill over and occasionally “burst” the dam itself. Nutritional density The first and most important step in controlling your hunger is to feed your body what it is hungry for, not a big gulp at the local convenience mart. All the food in most large commercial grocery stores, fast food restaurants and convenience marts is not what you need to turn off your appetite. The only way you can even begin to shut down your hunger is to feed the body complete foods. Here in America that means organic whole foods. Evolutionary Biochemistry As man evolved, he did not have convenience marts and fast food on every corner. Today, the biochemistry of man is still anachronistically Neanderthal, while on every corner are heavily processed foods that the biochemistry of the human is not prepared to process. Incomplete foods rob the body of precious minerals and micronutrients. Whole foods, on the other hand, are complete and add these precious nutrients back to the body. Processed sugar is a good example of how the biochemistry of the human has not evolved while the food industry has figured out ways to process almost every known food substance. It’s no wonder that today we have so much cancer, heart disease and stroke. Hunger control step number one Eat at least one whole food and organic meal a day. Whether you prepare this from the MericleDiet, which makes it very easy to have good whole food vegan sugar-free meals on short notice, or you prepare these meals yourself, makes no difference. Your body needs some whole foods. Once you have established a routine of at least one whole food organic meal a day, you can start working on the rest of your hunger control. Hunger control step number two This is one of the most important and “difficult” steps to accomplish. You have to stop or at least really restrict simple sugars (as we have recently covered). Why is this so important? Simple sugars like sucrose, honey and high fructose corn syrup, deliver huge loads of fructose and glucose at the same time. Not only can the human biochemistry not handle this as you all know by now, but they are very “addicting” chemicals. If you can’t stop your sugar habit, you will never be able to really control your hunger. This is extremely critical to ever regaining control of your hunger, your weight and the well being of your immune system. Hunger control step number three Understand that you will get hungry. This may happen both before your main meal of the day as well as after it. Be prepared. Stock your refrigerator with “healthy snacks.” Organic carrot sticks in water work for me. I come back from a run hungry, reach in the refrigerator and out come the carrot sticks. Peppers work well this way, celery or any other organic veggies. Keep large amounts of prepared salads ready as they make a great snack that is very low on the glycemic index. Whatever works for you, keep a good supply on hand, including fresh fruits such as apples and bananas. For myself, being the potato chipaholic (I’ve been to Potato Chips Anonymous many times), it took some practice. Now, I don’t even reach for the potato chip bag, I go straight for the carrots, even if there is a bag of chips on top of the refrigerator. Hunger control step number four Learn to think in percentages. Controlling your hunger is a huge project. I think it is actually more difficult for those of us who are adult onset diabetic or pre-diabetic. Understand that you will fail, more initially than later on. Most people just can’t stop bad eating habits overnight. This is an ongoing work-in-progress and will be for the rest of your life. Don’t ever get down because you failed, just strive to do better the next time. It is too easy to fail, and then just give up all together. Initially you may fail two or three times a day, but keep eating that one whole food organic meal a day. Soon you will be failing two or three times a week, and be a whole lot healthier. You will never be perfect, but as long as your weight and health are what you want them to be, you can go out and enjoy the ambience of pizza and beer or some great Mexican food -and not “worry” about it. I would like to leave you with this quote from one of my daughters, Danielle. You may cast a jaundice eye my direction for using one of my own family as an endorsement. Let me quickly dispell any thoughts of that, as in our family, it is extremely difficult to even get noticed, much less some positive words. Danielle Mericle In a lot of ways it comes down to your old saying, “balancing getting through the day with getting through your life.” There actually is a balance if you can find it. For example, last night we made a big Mexican feast for friends. I made a Mexican rice that required long grain white rice, which I know isn’t good. I also made chili rellenos which, although thankfully had no eggs, had quite a bit of cheese. But because I had eaten mostly brown rice, beans, and steamed veggies all week, I could easily eat that meal last night without worrying about it. Knowing what to avoid and then when you can get away with it -is the key. Danielle Mericle Ithaca, New York Thanks for your time. Guaranteed Loans; Getting An Agricultural Loan

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kum_Martin]Kum Martin For people engaged in agricultural production, getting capital for planting seasons can be a perennial struggle, especially if you are one of those farm owners who do not have enough properties or assets to back your loans. There are many instances where a farm owner is not able to cultivate all the areas of the farm because of shortage of funds. If the shortage of funds is because of the fact that production at the end of the crop season is considerable lower than expected, there can be a real problem. Although there are some banks and lending institutions that will extend agricultural loans to farmers, using the future produce of the farm as collateral, there are many banks and lending institutions that are not willing to take such a gamble. There are many factors that could go wrong in a crop season that make accepting the future harvest as collateral not very popular among banks and lending institutions. Most banks and lending institutions would still prefer to have tangible assets and properties as loan collateral. For farmers who need additional capital for their farm, but do not have the right collateral to enable them to get loans from banks, going for government guaranteed loans could be the answer to you problems. What are government guaranteed agricultural loans? Government guaranteed agricultural loans are intended for those farm owners who are in need of additional capital to cultivate their farms. The guaranteed loan does not require collateral from the farmer, as the government has already pledged to purchase the loan the bank has extended. The government will take care of such a loan to the farmer in the event where the farmer fails to pay for the loan.
